Road Upgrade: Barry Road Waihī
Roadworks are underway on Barry Road
We have awarded HEB Construction the contract to carry out road rehabilitation works on Barry Road.
Construction began on 1 October 2026, with the overall project expected to be completed in March 2027, weather and site conditions permitting.
What's happening?
The work starts at Kenny Street (SH25) and runs 960m towards Golden Valley Road.
It will include:
- Full depth road dig out (to a depth of 675mm)
- Stormwater drainage, including new kerbing
- Granular pavement construction
- Final surfacing.
To minimise disruption, the work is being carried out in three main stages. We'll keep you updated as each stage progresses.
Stage 1 Kenny St (SH25) to Banks St: Traffic and Access Information
You'll still be able to access Barry Road from Kenny Street (SH25), via a one-way system.
Vehicles exiting Barry Road towards Kenny Street (SH25) will need to follow a detour via Banks Street.
If you're in stage 1 and leaving your property, you won't be able to travel west towards Kenny Street (SH25). Instead, you'll need to travel east towards Golden Valley Road and follow the signed detour route via Banks Street.
A temporary 30 km/h speed limit will be in place through the work area.
Please follow all traffic management signage and directions given by the team on site.
We'll maintain property access wherever practical. If we need to temporarily restrict access, we'll let you know in advance.
Rubbish and recycling collections will continue as normal. Please place bins out as usual on collection day.
Working hours will generally be:
- Monday to Friday, 7am to 7pm
- Saturday, 7am to 3pm
- Occasional Sunday works may be required.

The overall work site
The site for the overall rehabilitation is approximately 954m long and extends from the top of Barry Road through to Golden Valley Road, just past Boyd Road, as shown in the map below.
Why we're doing this work
Parts of Barry Road have reached the point where they need more than routine maintenance. Rehabilitating the road now will improve its condition, extend its lifespan and help reduce the need for more extensive repairs in the future.
These works are part of Council’s ongoing investment in maintaining and improving our local roads, helping keep them safer, smoother, and more resilient for everyone who uses them.
During construction, residents can expect periods of increased noise and activity, as well as temporary changes to access and traffic arrangements, and possibly some delays while works are underway. We’ll make every effort to minimise disruption and maintain access wherever possible.
