May 2025 Update
Check out our new handout for information on the flood and drainage schemes on the Hauraki Plains and how they work. You can find this handout under the 'Documents' tab on this page.
The schemes do an important job - flood protection schemes protect people, towns, productive farmland, property and important infrastructure by helping minimise the risk of flooding. Drainage schemes direct water away from properties and towards canals, which are part of the flood schemes.
There is a lot that goes into the schemes, and this is outlined in the handout. There are some key points to take away:
- There are three flood/drainage schemes in our area.
- WRC manages two of them and HDC manages the other.
- They are funded through targeted rates.
- These schemes are integral in ensuring our communities stay connected.
- It is important private landowners do not damage or manipulate any of the assets to ensure the schemes function as they have been designed.
- The schemes are excellent but are not designed to stop all flooding.
- Refer to the handout for more information.
