FAQs

What are the changes to the kerbside collections?

Our new 10-year Solid Waste Contract with Waste Management NZ Ltd begins on 1 September 2023. They'll provide kerbside rubbish and recycling collections.

From 1 September 2023, Council will take over the management and operation of the Paeroa and Waihī Refuse Transfer Stations.

Here's what the new kerbside collection service will look like

    • new 25-litre lockable food scraps bin, collected weekly
    • new 140-litre wheelie bin for rubbish to landfill, (replacing the 60L pre-paid yellow rubbish bags), collected fortnightly on a user pays (pay as you throw) basis
    • Clean mixed recycling, collected fortnightly, using the current recycling wheelie bin (paper, cardboard, aluminium cans, tins and hard plastics 1,2 & 5)
    • Glass recycling, collected fortnightly, using the current crate
    • The new service will alternate each week between recycling+glass+food scraps week and rubbish+food scraps week.

Will the yellow pre-paid bags be collected after 1 September 2023?

Yellow bags will not be collected at kerbside from the 1st of September, however, we'll accept yellow pre-paid bags up to the end of December 2023 at the Waihī and Paeroa Refuse Transfer Stations.

It means you can use up any stock of bags that you have, but yellow bags will not be available for purchase from 1 September 2023, only the pre-paid Pay As You Throw (PAYT) tags.

Will I be getting a kerbside bin for green waste as well?

No. Green waste needs to be taken to the Refuse Transfer Stations.

Will the rubbish, recycling and crates all be collected in the same fortnight?

No. One week you will have your recycling bin (paper, cardboard, tins and rigid plastics 1,2 and 5) and glass crate collected, along with food scraps bin; the alternate week you will have your rubbish bin collected, along with your food scraps bin.

The food scraps bin will be collected weekly.
