To return treatment capacity at the Waihī Wastewater Treatment Plant a desludging programme has been completed.
The dissolved air flotation sludge, which is a by-product of the treatment process, was being returned into the oxidation ponds and we needed a long-term cost-effective solution for it's removal.
As part of a $2m programme to desludge the ponds 26 geotubes were filled but had some remaining capacity at the end of the works.
The ongoing solution is to use the remaining capacity in the geotubes.
Once the geotubes are fill, in approx. 3-4 years, we can remove the contents for vermicomposting and roll out a reduced number of new geotubes.
This will provide a long-term solution for sludge and improving oxidation pond performance into the future.
