We have already experienced how our climate is changing, from our recent experiences of floods and droughts. So, we need to make some decisions about our future here. We know that together we can solve difficult problems, and we have a history of being resourceful, thoughtful, and clever. Together we can plan a future where everyone feels confident and safe. Our communities hold a lot of knowledge of how our land works and know what we value here. This includes Iwi, whose knowledge of how people have lived here for generations will be an important part of developing a sustainable plan.

Hauraki District Council and Waikato Regional Council are now working with communities to make a plan for the future. The way we propose to achieve this is through a dynamic (flexible) adaptive planning process, in partnership with the community, which includes working closely with the Community Panel.

Upcoming Workshops

As part of the next steps for the Hauraki Plains Adaptation Planning project, we want to find out more about our communities’ tolerance to risk from natural hazards. Within our communities we know there is lots of knowledge of how our land works – both in normal conditions and during disrupted weather. Building our understanding of risk is a key part of developing an adaptation plan so everyone in our communities feels confident and safe.

We want to know what you value, how different natural hazard events might impact what you value, and when these impacts become unacceptable or intolerable to you. We want you to consider - how much risk are your communities willing or able to bear?

Come and chat to the team and get involved in our upcoming workshops. You'll find us at:

Ngātea Rugby and Sports Club - Tuesday 28 October, 12pm-2pm, Hugh Hayward Domain. Ideal for farmers and those working rurally.

Thames Valley Hockey Pavilion - Thursday 30 October, 5pm-7pm, Hugh Hayward Domain, Ngātea. All are welcome.

You can also send your feedback to the Community Panel Chairs at plainsadaptation@gmail.com.

How you can participate in developing a Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the Hauraki Plains:

Open Days: Keep an eye on Council's usual channels to hear when we're holding open days to come along and talk to the technical experts, Community Panel and Joint Working Party members.

Community Panel: The Community Panel is a key go between for the community and the Councils, so make sure you get behind them. You can contact the Panel with any questions or comments at plainsadaptation@gmail.com.

Newsletter: Join our mailing list to stay up to date. You will receive access to good quality technical information, hear about open days, and learn how the plan is progressing.

Partially funded by central government's Better Off Package funding to invest in the wellbeing of our communities.
