Kerepēhi has been busy over the last 12 months with construction of two new raw water storage reservoirs at the water treatment plant. Work continues on the replacement of the existing main from the Pekapeka intake on Hauraki Road.

Raw Water Storage Reservoirs

With construction now complete, the new reservoirs will add around 4 million litres of additional storage. This will significantly reduce the risk of a raw water shortage that can occur in severe weather events and due to the tidal influence of the source water (Waihou river).

At its previous processing throughput, the water treatment plant had about 24-hours of raw water reserves. Now the network can be continuously supplied which increases the resilience of the water supply without loss of service.

The budget for this project was approximately $2.7 million. Construction was carried out by Reliant Solutions Limited, who also constructed the two treated water storage reservoirs at the site in 2018. The two new tanks were constructed simultaneously at the back of the treatment plant.

The next important part of the project is to extend the new raw water rising main to feed these new storage reservoirs. The majority of this main is now laid. The focus is now on getting the final connections made before starting up the new line.

Raw Water Main

This involves replacing the current 450mm-diameter pipe from the Pekapeka intake to the Kerepēhi water treatment plant.

These pipes have reached their end of life. The renewals will increase resilience in the network and provide security of the supply.

A total of 5.3 kilometres of a 630mm-diameter raw water intake pipe is being laid which will connect to the two new raw water storage tanks. Budget for the pipeline is $6.05 million.

We will be posting regular updates throughout the Kerepēhi Raw Water upgrades right here. You can also keep up with the latest news throughout the Hauraki District by signing up for our newsletters.
